WHAT SAID:

Star Trekkers William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are reunited in a tale of a detective's quest for revenge against the man who raped his daughter.

SYNOPSIS:

Hooker is working a case with his old friend and ex-partner Lt. Paul McGuire. As they are wrapping up their caase, Hooker gets a call about a rape in his territory. Hooker and Romano respond to the call and McGuire goes along for assistance. When they arrive at the scene, the victim turns out to be McGuire's daughter Val. McGuire starts to go over the edge, bent on avenging the attack on his daughter. Val believes her attacker is Larry Foster, a member of her health club. She thinks she can identify him by his voice, but when Foster is brought in, she is unable to do so. Hooker continues making inquiries about Foster and gets a break when an out-of-town rape victim, now living in Los Angeles, agrees to testify against Foster. Meanwhile, McGuire breaks into Foster's house, steals his gun and plants it at the scene of the rape so he can frame him. Hooker is called to another rape and finds Foster and enough evidence to convict Foster. Because of his actions, though, McGuire is suspended from duty. Later, he goes to the precinct and takes Foster at gunpoint. Witnessing this, Hooker pursues McGuire and is able to finally convince him to give up.

REVIEW:

4Adam30 is out on patrol, joined in the back seat by Detective Paul McGuire, an old acquaintance of Hooker's (he and Paul dispatched the legendary Mosley Brothers 15 years ago). They act as the command post in their patrol/stakeout joined by several other undercover cars, including 4King22 and 4King23. After several hours of inactivity by the suspects (who are suspected of planning a liquor store robbery), McGuire inquires of Hooker whether he thinks they got a bad tip. Hooker states that they're "itchin' to caper." McGuire comments to Romano about Hooker's amazing instincts, while Romano reveals Hooker's recent financial problems; seems Hooker's bank lost all his checks, and have confused his account with that of one T.R. Booker. Romano suggests Hooker bank at Ascott Savings bank, as his new female friend Crystal could get him a great deal.

Suddenly the caper goes off, and 4Adam30 joins in the fray. During a foot chase, one of the thieves blows out the driver window of 4Adam30's vehicle with a shotgun, then zeroes in on McQuire. Hooker dives to Paul's rescue, much to McGuire's appreciation. Hooker views it only as repaying a debt he owed to McGuire 15 years ago, and is relieved that he was able to repay the favor before McGuire's imminent retirement.

In an aerobics studio across town, McGuire's daughter Valerie leads a class of step aerobics. A lecherous man in the class, one Larry Foster, eyes Val salaciously during her routine, which lasts about a minute. As the rest of the class files out, Foster asks Val to take him up on a long-standing dinner invitation. Val politely refuses, and Foster glares at her menacingly as she walks away.

Val leaves class and enters the parking structure connected to the mall in which her studio is located. A man in black wearing a black hood approaches her, threatening her with a gun. After he prevents her from screaming, he taunts her by revealing that he knows her name: "Sweet Val. Sweet, sweet Val." The man in black rapes her and escapes.

4Adam30 (with McGuire still in tow) receives a call to investigate a possible rape at a mall across town. They proceed to the scene, McGuire realizing only too late that it is Val's mall. Paul leaps from 4Adam30's car to find that it is indeed Val who is the victim. Romano is told that a witness saw a man in black holding something shiny approach Val. Val is shaken and battered, and an ambulance arrives to take her and Paul to the hospital.

At the hospital (the same hospital Val was born in -- Hooker remembers), Hooker arrives to take Val's statement. McGuire shows signs of stress. They both enter Val's room, and she reveals that she knew who the attacker was--Larry Foster. "He'll pay, I promise," Hooker says. "Yes, he will pay," Paul adds. "On my life, I promise." Hooker is suspicious -- those are very strong words.

4Adam30 arrive at the court house in an attempt to bring Foster in for questioning. As they approach the court room he has been working in, the door opens and out walks Marcy Wade, an attorney, followed by Foster amongst a group of bystanders. Foster attempts small talk with Wade, which she merely shrugs off annoyedly. Foster walks away. Hooker approaches Marcy, and asks her to please point out Larry Foster. She does, and Hooker & Romano cuff him and run him in. Foster protests, exclaiming "Do I look like a rapist?" To which Hooker replies, "You show me what a rapist looks like ... I'll show you what a cop's daughter looks like--after she's been raped!"

At the Academy, Foster joins a lineup of several other suspects. Val, McGuire and Hooker, along with Detective Chuck Tyler, await the lineup. Romano presides, asking each suspect (all of which are dressed all in black and wearing black masks) to step forward and repeat the phrase "Val, sweet Val, sweet sweet Val." Each suspect does, in a matter of fact manner. Val seems convinced that the perpetrator is the fourth man in the lineup, but displays some doubt. She tells Tyler that it might be him, and Tyler orders the suspects to leave the room. Foster tears the mask from his face, looks at Val, and smiles menacingly. Val shouts, "It's him!" However, Tyler is not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt, so Foster is freed and allowed to leave. McGuire becomes incensed and kicks over a chair, declaring to Hooker that "it may be time for me to take matters into my own hands."

Outside the Academy, Hooker's car gets towed for repossession -- apparently his bank problems have escalated. Back inside, Paul is rankled at Stacy's involvement in getting Paul a copy of Foster's police record file, when she told too many people that she had obtained it for him. Hooker tries to reason with him: "You're up to your armpits in emotion!" Captain Sheridan overhears their exchange, and asks if there's any problem. McGuire denies there is, declaring the information in Foster's file should be enough to put him away, yet it hasn't; Foster has been tied to previous rapes in New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., but every time was able to get off on technicalities. Captain Sheridan warns Paul to keep his distance from the case and let Hooker handle it, as his investigation seems to be leading somewhere. Paul refuses, leaving in a huff and tossing Foster's file back at Hooker.

Paul sits at home that night with Val, and they argue about the case. She wishes to forget about it, he vows to make Foster pay. He excuses himself, saying he has some business to attend to. He breaks into Foster's house, and plants a gun in Foster's garage.

Back at the Academy, Hooker and Romano discuss Foster's file (Romano sits at the desk of Officer Vicki Taylor; she is nowhere to be found). Hooker decides that tomorrow they need to track down Foster's previous rape victims to see if they'll talk.

The next day, Hooker visits the impound garage to get his car back, and has a humorous tête-à-tête with a bank employee over the telephone. Romano informs him that Marcy Wade, the attorney they spoke to the day before who identified Foster for them at the court house, just happens to be Foster's previous rape victim from Baltimore, recently moved to L.A. They drive off to question her.

Meanwhile, Larry rapes another woman in another Plaza parking structure, this time brandishing a knife and again calling her by name, "Sweet Ann. Sweet, sweet Ann."

On their way to the court house, 4Adam30 receive a call to investigate the rape at the Plaza. A witness tells Hooker "He ran that way!" It has taken Larry until this time to remove his black clothing and shove them in a garbage can; Hooker is hot on his tail and finds the clothes. Foster walks calmly outside the Plaza. Hooker calls his name, Foster turns around, recognizes Hooker, and begins to run. A rooftop chase ensues, Foster eventually leaps from the roof, while Hooker remains on the rooftop, only to dive down dramatically and slam Foster into a fruit cart before declaring "This time, maggot, you stay inside!"

Hooker discusses the new rape with Chuck Tyler in Tyler's office. Tyler concedes that the case against Foster is getting stronger, but is suspicious of this latest rape because it is the only one on Foster's record in which he used a knife instead of a gun. A Detective O'Brien arrives, declaring that McGuire found the gun from Val's case in Foster's house. Hooker is suspicious, and decides to confront Paul. That night, as Paul jogs, Hooker stops him on the street to tell him that planting evidence is going too far. Paul denies it at first, then begs Hooker to corroborate his lie, and state on record that he missed the gun in his search of Foster's garage. Hooker refuses. "This is wrong, Paul. Dead wrong!" Paul punches Hooker in the mouth, drawing blood. Hooker scolds him, then walks quietly away.

The next day, 4Adam30 talk to Marcy Wade about testifying. She agrees.

Back at the Academy, Captain Sheridan revokes Paul's badge and gun for planting the evidence in Foster's house. Paul accuses Hooker of selling him out, but Captain Sheridan assures Paul that he alone deduced what Paul had done. McGuire storms out of the Academy, takes a gun out of his car's glove compartment, and formulates a plan.

At Chuck Tyler's office, Hooker has assembled Val, Marcy Wade, and the woman Foster most recently raped, to ask them if they will testify against him. They all agree; Hooker asks Tyler if the case is thoroughly rejuvenated after Paul's tampering, Tyler agrees to prosecute.

Paul arrives back at the Academy, breaks into the brig, and kidnaps Foster in order to kill him. On his way out of the Academy, he bumps into Hooker and Romano, just returned from Tyler's office. Hooker tries to tell Paul to stop, that Tyler is going to prosecute. Paul refuses to listen, and drives himself and Foster away. Hooker pursues him, leaving Romano behind. They eventually end up on foot in a Zoo, with Hooker demanding that Paul release Foster. Paul refuses yet again, and demands that Foster beg him for mercy, "the way you made those women beg, the way you made my daughter beg!" Hooker gets between Paul and Foster. Paul threatens to shoot Hooker. "You wouldn't!" Hooker says. "Don't make me find out," Paul retaliates.

After several attempts to get Paul to pull himself together, Hooker is able to inform him that Tyler intends to prosecute. He once again gets between Paul and Foster, telling Paul to "decide who you're going to kill." This final selfless act gets through to him, and Paul holsters his gun.

Paul sits in a cell at the Academy awaiting trial. Hooker visits him in his cell, assures Paul he will support him all the way, then leaves when Val shows up.

Romano nervously presents Hooker with his free gift for opening up an account at Ascott Savings: a teddy bear. Hooker is incensed, asking Romano to clear things up with Crystal asap. Romano informs Hooker that Crystal no longer works at Ascott Savings Bank. In a fit of frustration, Hooker flings the teddy bear at his partner while yelling "Romanooooooo!" Freeze frame.

Beautiful.
